WARDOGS Open Beta: Keyless Access Window and Proton Status

Official Steam News on 5 September 2026 (21:08 UTC) opened the test to everyone: “THE CLOSED BETA IS NOW AN OPEN BETA!” The announcement body is one line: “Come break our servers. Until the Beta ends – Sunday at 08:00 UTC.” That end time is Sunday 08:00 UTC, which falls on 6 September 2026 — stated here as the announced window, not as an observed server status.

What changed: the test no longer requires a key, a Steam invite, or a preorder. Any player can join through the official Steam build for the announced window. The load-test intent is explicit in the wording — the developer is inviting as many players as possible to hit the servers before launch.

1. Open the WARDOGS Steam page with the account you expect to play on.
2. Confirm the beta is still inside its announced window on the official announcement or store page.
3. Install and launch only through the official Steam path — no key, no third-party client.
4. Report crashes and server issues through official channels, not code sellers.

Two closed tests ran before the open beta: the first on 21–23 August 2026, then Closed Beta 02 on 3 September 18:00 UTC to 5 September 08:00 UTC. Both are over; they are recorded so the access rules of those windows do not blur into the current open beta.

CB02 still required a Steam invite or a preorder, which guaranteed a seat. On 5 September the developer did not schedule another invite wave — it announced that the beta was open to everyone, per the record above. Preorder-guarantee advice from that era no longer describes how to get in.

GamingOnLinux reported on 5 September 2026 that the WARDOGS developers clarified the game will not support Linux via Proton at launch; support “may come later.” That is the current official line on Linux, replacing the earlier “we are working on proper support” status from the closed-test period.

During the closed tests, Linux support via Proton was disabled for the beta builds while the developers said they were working on proper support. The September clarification states Proton will not be in place at launch either, with “may come later” as the only stated path. Linux players should not assume the open beta or the launch build runs through Proton.

Check the account, the current official announcement, and the exact wording of the error before trying anything else. During the open beta there is no invite or preorder gate, so a rejection usually points at a window that has ended, the wrong Steam account, or an install problem — not at a missing key.

The open beta is a load test — the announcement invites players to come break the servers until Sunday 08:00 UTC. A useful report is a reproducible one: record what you were doing, what you saw, and when. Queue behavior, crashes, and server strain during a deliberately overloaded test are the data the developer is collecting.
