WARDOGS will not launch with error WD-L020? Team17 linked it to Windows 11 update KB5124010, and the official fix shipped in update 0.1.2 on 30 September 2026.
WD-L020 facts, official statement separated from community advice
The developer's reply of 23 SEP 2026 is the only official source on this error, and all it commits to is an investigation plus a rollback path. The seven launcher steps come from a third-party write-up for launcher errors in general.
Cause and workaround are quoted from the Team17_Assist developer reply dated 23 SEP 2026; the seven steps are a third-party list for launcher errors generally, not a documented cure for this code. The framing on this page expires once the official fix ships — the studio's announcement channels take over at that point.
WD-L020 is a launcher error, and it is not WD-L014
The current answer for an installation that will not start is official rather than guessed. On 23 September 2026 a reply from Team17_Assist, posted with the developer badge in the WARDOGS problem-report forum, confirmed that some players hit a WD-L020 error when launching the game, and stated that the team is investigating a possible compatibility problem with a Windows 11 update. If your launcher stops before the game window ever appears, that reply describes your failure.
WD-L020 is a launcher-stage error: it arrives before the login queue that has dominated reports since launch. That single detail decides the triage order. A long wait and a launcher stop are different failures, so the queue material does not apply here, and neither does anything written for a crash that happens after the game is running.
It is also a different family from WD-L014. WD-L014 is the prefix most often reported together with an Unable to launch WARDOGS message, and it is reported with varying suffixes. The two prefixes are handled as separate error families — nothing documented for one is evidence about the other, and the official reply in section 02 names WD-L020 alone.
What Team17 has confirmed, and what is still open
The official reply does three things and stops there. It acknowledges that part of the player base cannot launch WARDOGS and sees WD-L020. It reports that an initial investigation points to a potential compatibility issue with the latest Windows 11 update, KB5124010. And it states that the team is actively investigating and working on a fix.
The update it names is not an ordinary security patch. Microsoft lists KB5124010 as the 22 September preview update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. That is consistent with the shape of the outbreak: WD-L020 did not build up slowly, it arrived after a specific update landed, which is exactly the pattern you would expect from a compatibility problem rather than from a hardware or driver trend.
What the reply does not contain is just as useful for judging it. There is no confirmed root cause — the wording is a preliminary investigation. There is no release date, no patch number, and no statement that every WD-L020 report traces to the same trigger. Anything circulating as “the official WD-L020 fix” is not in this reply, because the fix did not exist when the reply was posted.
Update to 0.1.2 first; the KB5124010 rollback is the fallback
Step one is now updating the game. The official Update 0.1.2 patch notes of 30 September 2026 list a fix for the Windows 11 WD-L020 crash error, so most players affected by the 23 September outage should simply let Steam download 0.1.2 and relaunch. The steps below are the developer's earlier temporary route, kept for players who cannot update or who still see WD-L020 after 0.1.2: remove the Windows update. Reproduced in the order the reply gives it, on the official Windows path:
- Start > Settings
- Windows Update
- Update history
- Uninstall updates — select KB5124010 from the list and uninstall it
This is a system-level change to Windows rather than a game setting, and it is reproduced here only because the developer suggested it themselves. Nothing has been added to it: this page does not publish a second rollback method, a command-line equivalent, or a way to block the update from reinstalling. The reply documents one path, and that path is above.
The reply presents the rollback as the option for players who would rather not wait for the patch. That waiting period has now ended: the official Update 0.1.2 patch notes of 30 September 2026 list a fix for the Windows 11 WD-L020 crash error, so the current choice is simpler — update the game through Steam first, and use the rollback only if you cannot update or the error persists on 0.1.2.
Community fixes that may help, labelled as generic
A third-party write-up collects seven launcher fixes for WARDOGS. Its own framing matters more than the list: it does not claim one confirmed cause for WD-L020, and it names the launcher, Steam, background software and the Elytra anti-cheat as possible participants. Read the seven steps as generic launcher maintenance, not as a documented cure for this code.
1. Install the latest WARDOGS update. Confirm nothing is still unpacking: open Steam and let the Downloads queue finish before you test a launch.
2. End leftover processes. In Task Manager, close anything left running under WARDOGS, Steam, WARDOGS Launcher and Elytra before launching again.
3. Temporarily disable other anti-cheat and security software. The example given is Riot Vanguard. The source says to re-enable it after testing — this step is a test, not a permanent configuration.
4. Verify the integrity of the game files. In Steam, open the game's Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
5. Run Steam as administrator. Exit Steam completely, including the tray icon, then right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
6. Repair the Elytra anti-cheat. From the local game files, run Elytra-Setup.exe and choose Repair; the source says to restart the PC when it finishes.
7. Clear the Steam download cache. Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. The source notes that you will have to sign in to Steam again afterwards.
| SYMPTOM | STATED ORIGIN | STATED ACTION |
|---|---|---|
| The launcher cannot load the files it needs | Game files or install state | Verify the game files (step 4) |
| The launcher does not start at all | Steam permissions | Run Steam as administrator (step 5) |
None of these seven steps is an official WD-L020 fix, and the write-up behind them does not present them as one. What they share is that they are cheap and reversible, with the anti-cheat step the only one that changes a protection setting and therefore the only one worth restoring immediately after a test.
When this page goes stale, and what it cannot tell you
Dates, so you can weigh what you just read: the developer reply is dated 23 September 2026, the official fix shipped in Update 0.1.2 on 30 September 2026, and the material behind this page was re-checked on 1 October 2026. With the fix live, the KB5124010 rollback is no longer the primary route — updating the game is. The rollback stays on this page only as the documented fallback for players who cannot update or who still see WD-L020 on 0.1.2.
What this page does not claim, because no source supports it:
- The meaning of the characters after WD-L020 (unconfirmed). The fixed-prefix, changing-suffix behaviour comes from the third-party write-up; no official document maps those characters to a subsystem.
- A confirmed root cause (preliminary only). The official wording is that an initial investigation points to a potential compatibility issue — the investigation was still open on 23 SEP 2026.
- How many players the rollback helps (no data). Neither source publishes a success rate, a sample size or a measured result, so this page prints no figure of its own.
- Whether every WD-L020 report traces back to KB5124010 (unconfirmed). The official reply names the update as the direction of an investigation, not as the only trigger.
If your launcher still fails after the rollback and the seven generic steps, the useful thing you can add is evidence rather than another reinstall: whether KB5124010 was installed on the machine, and the exact text the launcher printed. Record both before posting anywhere — the suffix is the part nobody can reconstruct afterwards.
